Included are hundreds of beautiful and fascinating color photographs, many handpicked by the curators at the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film.
I was honored to be asked for a contribution to this valuable book. In the section on 20th century materials and process essentials, I was given 30 pages to take the reader from exposure to print. The essentials of silver-halide photography required for long-lasting, high-quality prints are explained in detail. Image and negative quality are defined, and it is shown how to achieve them. Detailed instructions for film and print processing are given. The Zone System and f/stop timing are described and customizable test methods are provided. The creation of a fine-art print is demonstrated using a sample print for which test-strips, work print and a final print is made. Archival processing is explained, including toning and storing prints to maximize print longevity.
Black & white images may not provide the most realistic representation of the world around us, but they are the preferred medium of most fine-art practitioners. They often combine brilliant whites and deep shadows to purposely exaggerated contrasts in order to create expressive images. Mature digital photography does not want to be without these possibilities. This might offer the opportunity for analog and digital photography to join their creative forces.
Chris Woodhouse and I made a very small contribution to this excellent book by making our research and experience with hybrid technology available to the authors. On a few pages, the reader is taken through the fundamentals of how to prepare a digital negative in order to make an analog print from any digital input. |
